Questions

The things people ask first.

S Evans Design is an independent design practice run by Sophie Evans, working across brand, web and product design on Squarespace and Shopify for clients in the UK and worldwide. These are the questions that come up most before a project starts.

Cost and scope
How much does a website cost?

Every project is quoted individually, because a single-page site and a full ecommerce build are not the same job. Tell me the scope and you get a fixed quote, usually within 48 hours. Nothing starts until the price is agreed.

What is included in the price, and what is not?

It depends on what we agree, and all of it is written down before anything starts. Copywriting, photography and image sourcing usually sit outside the build, but they can be arranged and quoted alongside it if you would rather have them handled.

How many rounds of changes do I get?

Usually three, agreed up front with everything else. On a tighter budget it may be fewer. Anything beyond what was agreed is scoped and priced before it happens, so you are never billed for a round you did not know about.

Do you work with smaller budgets?

I work across a wide range, from single-page sites through to full brand and ecommerce builds. Say what you have in mind and you will get an honest answer about what is possible within it rather than a sales pitch.

Can you do the brand and the website together?

Yes, and it is usually the better way to do it. The identity and the site are made by one person at the same time, so they agree with each other rather than being stitched together afterwards. It is quoted as a single project.

What if I only need something small?

Logos, landing pages, one-off fixes and quick turnarounds are all welcome. Get in touch and you will get a straight answer on cost and timing.

How does payment work?

Half to book the project in, half on completion. Everything is agreed as a fixed quote before any work starts, so there are no surprises at the end.

Platforms and build
Do you work with Squarespace?

Yes, most of the sites I build are on Squarespace. It suits service businesses, studios and portfolios, and it is straightforward to keep updated yourself once it is live, without needing a developer every time a sentence changes.

Do you work with Shopify?

Yes, for anything selling products. Shopify handles stock, variants, shipping and checkout properly, where a brochure-site platform will not.

Should I choose Squarespace or Shopify?

If you are selling more than a handful of products, Shopify. If you are selling a service, or showing work and taking enquiries, Squarespace. The deciding factor is usually whether you need stock and checkout to behave properly, not how the site looks, and you will get a straight answer on which one fits before anything is quoted.

Do you use templates or design from scratch?

Both, depending on the project and the budget. Either way the result is bespoke. A template can be a starting structure, it is not the design, and nothing goes out looking like it came off a shelf.

Will my site work properly on mobile?

Yes. Every site is designed and checked on mobile as well as desktop, because most people will see it on a phone first.

Working together
Who will I actually be working with?

Me, from the first conversation through to launch. S Evans Design is one designer, so the person you brief is the person doing the work. Nothing is passed down a chain or handed to a junior.

What do you need from me before we start?

As much as you can give, and the discovery phase is built to draw it out. There is a detailed questionnaire covering any existing brand and website, your competitors, and what you like and dislike. Most people find they know more than they thought once they see the questions.

How long does it take?

One to two weeks for a single page, two to three weeks for a four-to-five page site, and six to eight weeks or more when the brand is being made alongside it. Timelines assume content arrives on time, and I will say so at kick-off if that looks unlikely.

What if I do not like the first design?

That is fine, and it is why there is a process rather than one big reveal. Some of the best work comes out of the round nobody liked. Tell me what is not working and it moves.

Where are you based, and do you work with clients outside the UK?

I am based in the UK and work with clients worldwide, so where you are is not a constraint.

Content and assets
Who writes the copy?

You do, because you know the business better than anyone else will. If you would rather not, I can introduce you to Sarah May Hayes, the copywriter I usually work with.

Who supplies the photography?

You do. If photography is a gap there are two routes: sourcing from existing image libraries, or building a generated image library that is bespoke to you with no licensing to worry about. The second option themes well across a whole brand, and there are examples of it in the brand library package.

After launch
Do I own the site and the files when it is finished?

Yes. The site and the files are yours.

Who pays for the domain and hosting?

You do, in your own name, so you keep control of both. If you would rather not deal with it, the site can sit on my domain and hosting as part of a support package instead.

What happens after launch?

Thirty days of support are included, so if something breaks it gets fixed. After that there is an optional monthly retainer for upkeep and content changes, if you would rather the site was looked after than left alone.

Is the site accessible?

It depends what is scoped, and it can be built to whatever level you need. It is worth raising at the start rather than at the end, because accessibility shapes design decisions rather than being bolted on afterwards.

Brand
Is a logo the same as a brand identity?

No. A logo is one asset. A brand identity is the system around it: type, colour, layout, image direction, and the rules that hold it together wherever it gets used. A logo on its own rarely survives contact with a website, a deck and a social feed.

Can you refresh my existing brand rather than start again?

Yes. Not every brand needs starting from scratch. Sometimes the mark is fine and what is missing is everything around it, which is a smaller piece of work than a full rebuild.
